Surviving Postpartum Psychosis for Mother, Baby and Therapist

Dana L. Sinopoli, PsyD

Sunday, February 16, 2014

The Presenter:

Dana Sinopoli, PsyD.

Dr. Sinopoli earned her doctorate at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2011 and completed the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis fellowship program in 2009. Her dissertation, “The post-rape sexual healing process: A women’s story project through feminist epistemology” won the first place award for graduate research in women’s issues at the 2009 Illinois Psychological Association convention. She completed her APA internship and post-doc at Hartford Hospital’s Institute of Living.  Following completion of this residency, Dr. Sinopoli worked as a staff psychologist at the Villanova University Counseling Center and is now in full- time private practice in Center City. Interests include sexual and interpersonal trauma, first-break young adults and their family system, women’s agency, the internalization and manifestation of shame, and self-injury.

Brief Summary of the Program

This program explores the framework used to conceptualize a patient with whom I worked for two years following the birth of her baby and the treatment interventions which contributed to successfully keeping her out of the hospital and helping her recognize that she matters and exists outside of her roles of mother and wife.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • 1.       Discuss the impact of gender or the development and manifestation of postpartum psychosis.
  • 2.       Apply the concepts of containment and shame reduction to the treatment of postpartum psychosis and mother's homicidal ideation.
  • 3.       Explain the theoretical and clinical basis for the normalization of rage and aggressive thoughts of the parents of newborns.
